I am one of those bow hunters that gets out in the field 6 to 10 days per year. I have been bowhunting for about 15 years now. I am about to make a confession: I have never harvested a deer with a bow.
Thinking back though, I have only taken shots at three deer, during this period of time. What is really important is that I know why I missed each time (at least I do now). This may seem like obvious advice to seasoned venison providers, but here goes. Practice shooting with the exact same broad heads you will be hunting with. When I missed my opportunity at those first two deer years ago, my shots were low. I had always practiced with field tips, my broad heads did not fly the same !!! Today’s super fast bows can help, but the 25 year old bow I hunted with was not a speed burner.

It was a time when Ethan and his dad Greg had come up north alone. They went to bed at 11:25. In the morning they got up at 4:00 in the morning. We decided to go fishing. You might think it is stupid to go out fishing at 4:30 in the morning.... But it works pretty good for us. We got dressed and had a fast breakfast and went outside. There was 3 deer in the field. Then they ran off into the woods. We hooked up the boat and checked the motor and all that stuff. When it was all done we got into the truck and drove away. It took 40 minutes to get there. It was cool to see the lake, the trees, the hills, and the sun coming up. I still remember that sight. ...

The 2011 Monday Night Broadhead League officially kicked off this past Monday night at the Rib Mountain Bowmen club. I had the priviledge of shooting with my son Jaxon and my best friend Curt Schleicher. Jaxon was so excited to shoot with the "guys", and all he could talk about was "beer frame", and how he was not going to lose it. My dad started me in this league many years ago, it is a fun league with a great group of guys. ...
